Optionally, embark on an exciting safari at Yala National Park, Sri Lanka’s most famous wildlife reserve, spanning 1,268 sq. km of forests, grasslands, and lagoons. The park is home to elephants, crocodiles, buffaloes, monkeys, and the elusive Sri Lankan leopard, with early morning safaris offering the best chance to spot them. Afterward, proceed to Kataragama to visit the revered Murugan Temple, a sacred pilgrimage site for people of all faiths, dedicated to Lord Skanda, the six-faced, twelve-armed deity. The temple, with origins dating back to the 2nd century BC, is especially renowned for its annual July–August festival featuring fire walking and Kawadi dancing. Later, check in to your hotel and relax, with an overnight stay in Kataragama.
